Here's what's happening: Just a quick note: I'm taking some vacation time off with my family starting on Monday, as we head to a small cabin in Maine for a couple of weeks. I'm going to do a lot of shooting while I'm up there, with family and friends, and I'll probably be posting some shots, but the news posts will be pretty sporadic for the next two weeks. If I get any decent shots I'll post them here on the blog. I found this site, which offers very cool free Photoshop brushes, on the CreativeGuy.com blog (a really great blog by the way), and this collection of brushes is one of the best I've seen. If you're into custom brushes, and into getting them absolutely free, then click right here. There's an interesting article over at PDN's site on getting photo releases for…

Hope everybody had a great fourth. Here's the news: John Beardsworth has posted a very extensive, menu-by-menu list of the new features added in Lightroom 1.1 (over at this site Photoshopservices.co.uk). If you were wondering if your favorite "pet" feature (or fix) made its way into this new version, this is the place to check. Well done, John. :-) If you're going to the Photoshop World Conference & Expo this September, there's an optional pre-conference Workshop (the day before Photoshop World officially starts) that you might want to check out. It's a beginner's intro to using your digital SLR, and it's taught by pro landscape photographers Laurie Excel (AKA, "The Equipment Lady" and the person behind NAPP's own Camera Gear Desk). Laurie is a wonderful teacher, and in this workshop you'll finally learn what all the buttons and dials do, why they're there, which…

I received a couple of emails from readers who couldn't find my Lightroom 1.1 update once they got to Peachpit.com's Website, but luckily my friends over at Peachpit Press were kind enough to forward these step-by-step instructions: 1. Go to http://www.peachpit.com/register 2. If you have an account log in with your e-mail address and password. If you haven't previously registered with Peachpit, you'll need to register (it's free and takes less than one minute). 3. Enter the 10-digit ISBN number found on the back of the book into the ISBN field (not th3 13-digit one---the 10 digit one). 4. Answer the security question, which asks you to look something up in the book (that way, they know you really own the book). 5. Once you've answered the question, a new screen will appear (shown above--click on it for a larger view), then click on…

I'm back from our annual company cruise (we do a series of meetings at sea each year), and I was able to sneak in a couple of shoots while I was there. Here are two shots (click on either for a much larger view) taken on the Bahamas island of Coco Cay, where Larry Becker and I spent a couple of hours after our Saturday meetings (both were taken with a Canon 5D, with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I also got a chance to use the Hoodman Pro Loupe again----absolutely essential for outdoor shooting). Dave Cross and Corey Barker did a shoot with a local model in Downtown Nassau, and Dave has posted some shots over at his blog, at DaveCross.com Now, for some of that Monday news, on Tuesday: Jeff Revell turned me onto this clever Photoshop tutorial called "Improve your photography…
