We just had legendary food photography Joe Glyda down to the Kelby Training Online Studios for a new online class we’re releasing in the next few weeks on how to shoot food like a pro. I stopped by the set during the taping, and got to talk with Joe for a couple of minutes, and he gives us a little behind-the-scenes look into his upcoming online class. Check out the short video below for a quick preview.

you know Scott, food photography is amazing, actually really really cool BUT…there’s this other guy buy the name of, well, Joe, whom hasn’t had a new video up in a long while. Joe McNally you say? Why yes! That is who I’m talking about. I’m gonna throw some coins (real gold mind you) into the wishing well hoping for a few new McNally videos to go live soon. Is there any in the works???

I appreciate how food shooting is a visual as well as culinary endeavor, having had to do it in college years ago…what you see is NOT what you would want to eat. LOL
An idea for a future blog (maybe guest blogger?) would be a makeup/stylist who works with photographers. Lots of serious amateurs would like to kick up their portraiture a notch, and the do’s and don’ts of makeup and styling tips as relates to photo appeal is a topic I’d like to see which augments success of photography. It would be a keeper for future reference as well…

Back in the day when I was assisting I remember working for photogs who got an occasional food assignment & how badly they would end up making the food look. It’s a real specialty kind of photography. One thing I learned if you don’t know how to shoot food, do yourself a huge favor and get a food stylist. I recall 1 time where we shot some Kraft food products and those snacks in a can may taste fine but wow they can be a challenge to photograph.

I’ve been to Joe Glyda’s “How To Light For Shooting Food” sessions at the last three Photoshop Worlds and thoroughly enjoyed it. My only complaint is that it was too short!
Scott, please encourage Mr. Glyda to do a full day workshop at PSWorld and a book on food photography!

Well, Mr. Glyda certainly is legendary ! Understatement at best….. I hope to see a whole series based on food photography, and all the food “tricks” utilizing Joes knowledge and expertise. He’s the man…. what an outstanding instructor to have on board.

I use LAB color for working with fruits and so. Nothing compared with it, as your Dan Margulis would say. I’m Kelbytraining member, many tahnks for your excellent videos.

Are people afraid to use the word ‘Photograph’ any more????? I was always told that you shoot people with a gun and you photograph people with a camera. Same with food I think I would rather photograph food rather then shoot it. Just my thought.

Dear Mr. Kelby
My post is not about shooting food, but making that one-page collage like that the house numbers from Barcelona and the Ferrari one from Tuscany.
I live out in the country, so I’m thinking of shooting various barn doors or mailboxes. I’m just not sure if I should shoot them straight on or on various angels or what. Do you have any pointers to help me out?

Andrew remember that a camera has but one eye, We as humans have two eyes and can see the prespective as a result you as the photograher will have to indroduce that prespective to make the subject look attractive. AS you look through the camera do NOT just look at the subject but all around in the viewfinder. It depends on the subject so I can not tell at what angle. But try and experiment around. Don’t forget to try selective focus.
