I want to wish all my readers (well, at least the US-based ones) Happy Independence Day.

I'm taking today off to spend some time with my family, and I hope you're able to do the same. Have a great day and we'll see you here tomorrow for “Free Stuff” Thursday.

Just in case: here’s what â˜Independence Day' Really Means to Us
Today is a national holiday celebrating our country's independence from traditional film. No longer will we press the shutter button thinking, "Well, that just cost me 22¢" or "Well, that's 36â”time to pop in another roll." or that phrase heard so often on vacation, "I need to stop and buy some film."

Should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: No longer will we wait hours, or days, to see our prints only to find out that someone was blinking or the flash didn't fire. No longer will we go quitely into the night, to drop off our film in an overnight drop box. We're going to live on to shoot for free another dayâ”free from the tyranny of film chemicals and safe lights; changing bags and temperature regulators; cotton gloves and Print tongs. No today as we gather together to fill our 16 and 32-gig cards with wild abandon we celebrate our real Independence Day! (-insert wild cheers here).

  1. Nice adaptation of the Independence Day speech! I was just telling my wife that it would be fun to watch that movie, and she admitted that she has never seen it! Today we celebrate watching Independence Day!

  2. @JosephandElissa the speech in that movie, I think is one of the best speeches ever, I get goose bumps every time I watch it, and I’m British.

  3. I guess I just fail to see how shooting film equates to being taken over by a group of aliens who want to create mass genocide. Or, why this even makes sense when digital and film can live happily together if all the critics just stop comparing the two. And for your adapted speech to even make sense, you should be against digital, as it is the medium that is attempting to “take over and destroy film.”

  4. you can’t tell if your flash fired or not before getting prints back? No wonder you run a photoshop mag. You should probably leave photography to professionals.

  5. I respect your photoshop skills, but I don’t understand why you need to bash film. Part of being American is the freedom of choice, the freedom to choose whichever creative medium one desires. With film, I don’t have to pay for annual upgrades for software, nor will my equipment be outclassed within months of being purchased. My medium format camera, which was purchased for a fraction of the cost of a full frame DSLR, will continue to have a higher resolution for years to come and the tonal depth of film will never be matched by a CCD or CMOS sensor. I think it would behoove you to respect the freedom of choice.

  6. Great take on thespeach. Good fun to read!
I still shoot film from time to time. And I don’t think Scott has anything against it. It’s just a fun post. So enjoy and don’t get all worked up.
