Hey Gang: Just a few quick things to take you into the weekend: (1) I messed up on my class title at Canon's theater at WPPI Earlier in the week I said I'd be teaching Sports Photography classes in Canon's booth, but thankfully I was way off (I gotta stop posting these things really late at night when I'm half asleep). Instead I'll be doing three presentations where I'll be covering how to make great portrait images using everything from natural light to hot shoe flash to strobes. Here's my WPPI Canon booth teaching schedule: > Monday at 10:45 am > Monday at 3:15 pm > Tuesday at  11:30 am Hope I'll see you at one of these in Vegas next week. (2) I'm working on Part 5 of my "The Digital Photography Book" series I'm knee deep in the hoopla of writing the…

Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks for Designers, Vol. 2 Corey Barker brings you this completely new set of techniques, tricks, and tutorials in this second volume of the Down & Dirty Tricks for Designers series. Ever wonder how that movie poster was created, or how they created that cool ad in the magazine, or maybe even how to take a seemingly mundane photo and give it the Hollywood treatment? This is the book for you. Whether you are a designer, artist, or even a photographer, there is something here for everyone. Leave a comment for your chance to win one of three signed copies of this book! Creative Cloud Month on KelbyOne Each weekday this month, a new Creative Cloud class is being added to KelbyOne! Hi. I’m Steven. Although I was flattered to be asked to contribute this Wednesday, I nearly passed up the opportunity because I truly didn’t know what I could offer that would be worth reading. I am a photographer, which is why I was considered in the first place, but I don’t have much to say about gear or workflow. Instead, if I could leave you with anything, I’d say: Everything matters. From my experience it’s the most important thing to remember. Big things like how you treat people or how you conduct your business are obvious, but little stuff is often overlooked. I’ve seen the smallest details come back around in huge ways and I’ve noticed that people notice more than you’d think. Most, including myself a lot of times, get caught up with their normal routine and miss a lot because what they…

http://youtu.be/wgkeAd9YGIg OK, it's here --- I finally put together a book that readers have been asking me to do for years --- one where I compile some of my favorite chapter intros from all my books into just one book of nothing but chapter intros. These quirky chapter introductions have become a tradition in all my books and they're there to give my readers a "mental" break from all the step-by-step tutorials and such. These offbeat intros have very little (OK, pretty much nothing) to do with what's actually in the chapter itself -- again, they are just totally there for fun and I hear from readers all the time who really dig them (and I hope you will, too because if not they'll just really p@$& you off). Fresh, hand-picked goodness on every page Anyway, I hand-picked the intros (it really is nothing…

I am psyched to be back at WPPI this year (the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) Conference & Expo in Las Vegas next week. Last year was my first time ever speaking there and I had a really great time, and excited to be back again and expanding my classes. Here's my speaking schedule:  (1) WPPI Conference Track: “Portrait Retouching Secrets for Photographers” Tuesday, March 4 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM Portrait Track Canon Theater I'll be teaching sessions on Lighting and Portraiture in the Canon booth: > Monday at 10:45 am > Monday at 3:15 pm > Tuesday at  11:30 am B&H Photo Booth I'll also be teaching a session on "Shooting it with Just One Light" for B&H Photo at their booth/theater: If you’re at the show, I hope you’ll catch one of my sessions (and if you see me wandering around, make sure you…

http://youtu.be/m3Q_mjG--pQ First, our Quote of the Week (which has already made it's way around Twitter). So, Peter was our in-studio guest for our "Blind Photo Critiques" episode of "The Grid" this week, and during the show we brought up one particular set of submitted portraits that had a lot of problems and Peter is trying to be as kind as possible with his comments but you can see he's really struggling with it. We ask him on the show, "If you had to give this photographer one bit of advice, what would it be?" and he's really trying to be nice, so he tells them they need to take a "Beginner's portrait class," and Matt is trying to help Peter pin down what the problem is, so he asks Peter, "Lighting? Expression?" and this sets up our "QUOTE OF THE WEEK" (it's the 2nd…
