I am thrilled to announce that Jay Maisel’s “Light, Gesture & Color,” a book I believe will go down as one of the greatest, most important photography books ever written, is now shipping. I could go on and on and tell you why, but I believe Ellis D Vener , one of the first reviewers on Amazon,  said it best in this one sentence from his review:

“There’s more smart-ass, hard earned wisdom about what it takes to be a photographer, and maybe even how to learn to see and and cherish what is actually around you, in this slim book than in a thousand photographic how to manuals and monographs.”

That description totally nailed it. There is only one Jay Maisel â” a true living legend of photography â” and Jay makes you think and feel in a way few photographers on this planet can. The book kind of reminds me of Joe McNally’s groundbreaking “The Moment it Clicks” in the way the frank, genuine, and insightful stories and lessons are surrounded by some really extraordinary photography.

Please take a moment to watch the short trailer (above) where Jay tells us in his own words about the book (that’s our own Mia McCormick with Jay â” we were honored to be able to work with Jay to produce his book, which is published by our publishing partner Peachpit Press).

What an incredible Holiday Gift this would be. Here’s a link to it on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Have a great weekend everybody, and we’ll see you here Monday for my field report on the new Canon 100-400mm f/4.5 – f/5.6 lens (I had planned on having it ready today, but fell behind onâ¦wellâ¦pretty much everything).

Mornin’ Everybody, here’s what’s up:

1) How to Sharpen Portraits of Women in Lightroom
Since I took over the helm over at I’ve been posting lots of new content, including this short tutorial about I question I get asked a lot. Here’s the link.

Peter’s here wrapping up his “Mastering the Headshot” book, and he’s recording a class on “How to find the “one” (how to know which shot out of an entire shoot is “the one” and while we’re here, you know RC and I have to get him on “The Grid.’

Hope that helps you kick off your Monday! :)

P.S. I got a chance to field test Canon’s new 100-400mm f/4.5 to f/5.6 lens on an NFL game recently and I’ll be posting the full report on Friday here on the blog.

This was another really tough one. In fact, I’d say this year’s Leader Competition had the best images submitted of any year yet, and that makes picking one winner a really tough decision. Really tough.

I’m announcing the winning image, and three honorable mentions that were all in the running (and any one could have easily have been the winning image â” it was that close!).

Congratulations to our 2014 Worldwide Photo Walk Leader Competition, Israel Zapata from Spain.

I just loved this shot â” I love the sense of movement, the expression on the subjects face, and how the photographer captured the feeling of being right there alongside him. Really well done.

These leader shots didn’t win, but were so good I thought they deserved special mention. Here they are (in no particular order):

Above: This was has such a whimsical quality to it. Great timing â” great capture!

Above: Did you catch that this photo was taken with a cell phone camera?

Above: I love the color, composition, and simplicity of this shot. Great eye!

Congratulations to all the Leaders who entered, and a special thanks to everyone who gave their times and talents as a leader. :)

All my best,

P.S. Next up: The People’s Choice Awards :)

Today in the U.S. we celebrate Thanksgiving; a national holiday where we give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy (and I truly feel like the most blessed guy on earth). Traditionally this is a day  where families come together to eat a Thanksgiving turkey feast, and then we watch football until we pass out. It's just about a perfect day. :-)

Our offices are closed today for Thanksgiving, but I'll be back here tomorrow with some insane deals on all our stuff in honor of the biggest shopping day of the year (known as Black Friday).

In the meantime, please enjoy the stock image above (nothing brings the warmth, togetherness, and joy of Thanksgiving together like a stock image with soft cushiony letters).

In all seriousness, here's wishing you and your family a joyous, happy, and yummy Thanksgiving. :-)

All my best,
