Above: It was a cold, gray day in Richmond â” perfect for shooting indoors. Here’s an iPhone pic of me in front of The Byrd (photo by Brad Moore).

So, last month I’m reading USA Today (online) and I run across an article about classic old historic movie theaters (link) and I saw that one of them was in Richmond, Virginia, which was great because in just a few days I was going to be in Richmond with my seminar tour. So, I asked my assistant Lynn to contact the theater and see if there was any way I could come in the day before my seminar; set up a tripod; and take  some shots of the theater while it was empty. Well, as luck would have it, the theater manager (a really cool guy named Todd Schall-Vess) was a KelbyOne subscriber and had some of my books as well, so we were all set for our afternoon shoot, and he pretty much gave us the run of the place, which was awesome.

There are not HDRs
I did shoot three exposures (one regular exposure, one 2-stops under-exposed, and one 2-stops over), and I tried doing some HDRs, including 32-bit HDRs but the problem was always the chandelier â” when the HDRs merged into a single file, the chandelier was still blown out big time, so instead I put all three images into the same file on their own separate layers (Open all three images, then go under Photoshop’s File menu, under Scripts, and choose Load Files into Stack). Then I just used Layer Masks to paint in the chandelier and ceiling from the layer that was under-exposed, and then I painted in areas that needed to be brightened from the over-exposed layer, so kind of an old-fashioned layer mask party. It takes longer, but it was much more effective than the results I was getting from regular HDRs (including trying Photomatix Pro 5).

The theater is MUCH darker than it looks in these photos
In fact it’s so dark that Todd Schall-Vess (the theater’s manager, and a photographer himself), told us that one time a photographer was there to shoot the theater and asked Todd to turn the lights on. Todd told him, “All the lights are on.” I could see how he’d ask that â” it was incredibly dark inside, so my shots are actually brighter than the theater. When I made them look like it really did, you would swear the shots were 2-stops under-exposed.

The Byrd Rocks!
My thanks to Todd Schall-Vess for letting us takes some photos of The Byrd. Just a beautiful place, and if a three-hour long movie hadn’t been playing that night, Brad and I would have been there that night to take in a show â” it’s a perfect place for it, and one of just a handful left like it anywhere in the country, and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity.

OK, I’ve gotta hit the sack â” big day today here in Vegas and a long flight home.

Last Friday I had my last football shoot of the season (sniff, sniff), but it was a doozy! It was the Tennessee Vols first bowl game since 2010, and it was an electrifying atmosphere to shoot a football game. Such a blast!

I was shooting with the Vols photo crew (led by the awesome “Big Daddy” Don Page) so I had lots of extra access (including the locker room after the big Vols win), and I covered it all over on exposure.co

I also posted some of the images in that post that I uploaded to Instagram during the game (mostly behind-the-scenes stuff), and I showed the final shot of having to shoot through a throng of other photographers and video camera and mics at the end of the game (see below).

It’s taken me a while, but I finally got my football shots from the Vols/Gator’s game a few weeks back, posted over at Exposure.co.

I’ve got lots of behind-the-scenes shots, and the whole story behind the day, including shots inside the locker room; on-field during warm-ups, and of course during the game itself.

I’m shooting the Bucs/Vikings NFL game on Sunday if I can shake this cold that’s hit me this week. Finger’s crossed ’cause it could be a great day of really mediocre football. ;-)

You know if the Monday after the game I post a Demotivational Poster, I probably didn’t have a great shoot. I know that generally as the season progresses you’re supposed to get better and better,right? And I was really feeling like I was “in the zone” two weeks ago at the Falcons/Giants game at the Meadlowlands, but dang I just do not know what happened yesterday but I just had a real clunker!

It seemed like I was always in the wrong position, and I missed some stuff I definitely should have caught, and I was just generally to the point that I wanted to chuck my gear in the trash bin on my way out of the stadium. I didn’t, mind you. But I wanted to.

Now, don’t get me wrong â” I still had a blast
Any time I get to shoot with my buddies Mike Benford and Jimmy Cribb from the Falcons, I always have a great time, but at the same time I always want to do my very best when I’m shooting for a team or a news wire (or heck, even just for myself), so I was kicking myself all the way to the airport (by the way, I think one thing I did do was prove my undying love for Delta by leaving the game around 4pm and not arriving back home until after midnight. After flying USAir to Charlotte last week, I came running back to Delta screaming, “Please, please take me back! I’ll do a connection in Atlanta â” anything â” just don’t make me fly USAir again!”).

A Mini-Momentous Occasion

Two unusual things happened during this game:

(1) It was a Sunday during the football season and the Bucs did not lose (it was their ‘bye’ week).
(2) It was my first time shooting the Ravens, and until yesterday they were the only team in the NFL that I hadn’t shot yet, so I was psyched to now have shot all 32 teams (plus, it’s always a blast to shoot in a different stadium). Still about 12 NFL stadiums I haven’t shot in yet, My top most-wanted stadiums to shoot in are; Lambeau Field (Green Bay), Seattle, the 49ers new stadium and Foxborough.

I was back using my 1Dxs this week, since I had to send the 7D Mark IIs back, and I shot with the 200-400mm f/4 with the built-in 1.4 tele. On my 2nd body I used a 70-200mm, except when I went up top for those stadium shots.

Anyway, I’m on my flight back home right now (got to go with the family to Disney World on Saturday, so this was just an awesome weekend all the way around), but I’m back in the saddle and back in the office tomorrow.

Here’s what’s coming up this week:

Tomorrow: Something, I’m sure. Not quite sure what yet. I’m open to ideas. Maybe an Exposure Post on my Vols shoot if I can get it done in time (I’m about 75% done).
Wednesday: Dave Black is in town and we’re doing blind photo critiques on ‘The Grid.” Check my Facebook page later for a link. Of course, we’ll have a cool guest blogger on Wednesday as well.
Thursday: Brad will be giving any free stuff here on the blog. Probably stuff he’s not authorized to give away. We also release new classes every Thursday at KelbyOne.com, so they’ll be one or two for sure.
Friday: I’m keeping my fingers crossed about sharing some new technology on Friday, but it’s iPad related and believe it or not, I left my iPad in London (luckily, Dave Clayton found it in one of his bags — long story, changing trains, blah, blah), anyway Fed Ex has made me getting my own iPad require an act of Parliament, but hopefully I’ll have it in time for this cool new thing by Friday.

Hey, have you met Ajna?
She is our official “Dutchess of Social Media” and she’s awesome! If you’re not following her (she runs our KelbyOne twitter and Facebook page), ya know, you really oughta. She’s always posting behind the scenes photos, and running contests and giveaways and stuff, and she probably knows more about what’s actually happening tomorrow than I do (clearly), so give her a follow if you will.

This is one of the most creative things we’ve done here at KelbyOne  â” the idea started as a class, then it morphed into a documentary and now it has grown into a feature film and we’re just so excited about it. Warbirds is the brainchild of renown aviation photographer Moose Peterson, and the aerial footage, and stories behind the men that flew these Warbirds is just amazing.

I shared this shot last Friday on Social Media and here’s what I wrote:

“I hesitate to even post this shot from yesterday’s bridal shoot (Kalebra was there doing the art direction and she was just amazing). It’s one of my favorites but I hesitate to post it because I emailed it to a buddy last night and he said “Selective Color?” Of course, it’s not. There’s lots of other color in the image. Please don’t make me regret sharing it with a chorus of selective color comments. Many thanks.”

So, I held my breath, and posted the image. Luckily the comments were very kind (over 160 that day), except for the usual few unsolicited critiques (groan), but then one of the commenters, Daniel Nicholas said something thatâ¦wellâ¦here’s what he wrote:

“I love it!!! He must be color blind lol”

The moment I read it, it hit me. Oh my gosh â” my friend actually is color blind!!! I am not making this up. I just about fell on the floor!!! My friend was just ribbing me either way, but literally laughed out loud the moment I read that, and felt a whole lot better about sharing it.

Anyway, here’s a behind-the-scenes photo — and if you look on the screen you’ll see the final image is very close to what was captured (more in the caption below the photo).

Above: While she was well lit from the front, from behind it was pretty dark, and I wanted to over-exposed the background so it would blow out to white (for effect), so I had to use a tripod. I actually started with the tripod extended up over my head and used a stepladder (a LadderKart actually), but I kept getting parts of the ceiling in the shot so I finally lowered it and came back down. 

Camera Settings:
This was shot at f/3.2 at 1/10 of a second. My ISO was 640 (I was on a tripod so I could have lowered the ISO quite a bit, but it would have slowed the shutter speed down a lot and if she moved even a little, it would be blurry, so I left it where it was. I was shooting a Canon 1Dx so the noise doesn’t show anyway).

Tethering:
I’m shooting tethered into Lightroom 5.5, and that’s Julio (our 2nd assistant on the shoot â” Brad Moore took this behind-the-scenes shot). Kalebra is a few feet behind Julio so she can see the screen and direct the bride). We have a Tethertools laptop stand we usually mount on the tripod, but it was trickier than it looks on those stairs so we removed it and Julio just held the laptop. He loves holding laptops. It’s a sickness.

Venue:
It helps to have an amazing venue, and we sure did. This was taken at the Kapok Tree Event Center in Clearwater, Florida. It is literally attached to, and shares the same parking lot as Sam Ash Music. I think I should get some points for completing this shoot and never walking into Sam Ash, even though I walked directly past their front door. I think that was my biggest accomplishment for the day, but when I returned to the office, the used Boss Super Chorus stomp box I ordered had arrived, so somehow it all worked out.

I think you can see, the camera part of this was simple â” what made this come together was having Kalebra doing the art direction, and having the vision for this shot in the first place â” that just left me to compose, get the exposure I was looking for, and hit the shutter button. We make a great team. :)
