All Access: Your Backstage Pass to Concert Photography
Alan Hess just released a book that’s been years in the making, All Access: Your Backstage Pass to Concert Photography! If you’ve been to Alan’s classes at Photoshop World or watched his (and Scott Diussa’s) class on Kelby Training, you know he’s the go-to guy for all things concert related. Not only does he cover concert photography from A-Z in this book, he also includes Pro Tips from other concert photographers, lighting directors, musicians, and photo editors.

I (Brad Moore) am honored to be included in Alan’s book, along with my buddies Scott Diussa, Drew Gurian, Hali McGrath and others. You can see the full table of contents over at Alan’s website, and leave a comment for your chance to win one of two copies of this book!

Blind Critiques on The Grid
Yesterday Scott and Matt tried something new on The Grid. Viewers were invited to submit photos to be considered for blind critiqued on the show! I went through all of the submissions and chose people at random, grabbed their images, and put them in numbered folders so that Scott and Matt wouldn’t know whose images they were. From that pool, they chose the ones they thought would be the most helpful to critique, then gave their feedback on the show.

According to our live viewers, this was one of the most helpful and appreciated episodes we’ve done! There’s a good chance the guys will be doing another one of these in the future, so keep an eye out on Scott’s Google+ and Facebook pages for news on that.

The episode should be posted on Kelby TV sometime today if you missed the live airing, or you can also subscribe to the podcast in iTunes.

Last Week’s Winners
The winners of last week’s prizes are… Laura Downs for the Photoshop World pass, and Anna Soens for the RC Concepcion Web Bundle!

That’s it for this Thursday. Leave a comment for your chance to win one of these great prizes!

  1. Ok, this is selfless here. I suck as a photographer. I have no talent at all (If I do I sure don’t show it), but my wife is an up and coming Photographer with raw talent. She has natural abilities that you just can’t teach, so I am leaving a comment here, hoping to win Jay’s DVD for her. She would love it and benefit from it and she has been a really good wife and mother (soon to be of 2 children-1our 5 year old daughter, and 2-of our first born son due in April, so she deserves it. She had to give up her Photography job because she was too pregnant to move around like she needed to. This would be an excellent surprise and thank you for her. I would be so grateful!

  2. The J Maisel DVD would be helpful indeed for learning how to put the Big Apple’s scenery to good use, in perspective and catching that magic moment… please throw my name in the hat.

  3. That DVD would be great.

The Grid was pretty good today. It might be an idea to do a Grid spin-off series – Blind Critics. One genre a month – professionals non-wedding, weddings, hobbyists, serious non-professional, and such. Bring on guests to help (David Z, Zack). After a year, just have the archives.

  4. Love Thursday’s.  Would be even better if I won the Jay Maisel DVD’s.
Really enjoyed the blind critique on “The Grid”.  Long live the crop tool :)

  5. Brad, I’d love to win the Jay Maisel DVD set, although I can watch them anytime on Kelby Training! :-)  Alan’s book would be nice to win as well.  Your choice! :-)

    Great Free Thusday Post!

    –John

  6. Wow, some terrific news and great prizes!!!  The only one I’d be able to accept is the Jay Maisel dvd si count me in for this one and out for the classes.

  7. Since it has been so difficult for me to go from Venezuela to the workshop of Jay, I hope at least have the good luck to win the DVD. Thank you Scott for the opportunity.

  8. Wow, there is a lot to win! I REALLY dig that Seattle DSLR video workshop! Since I earned my BA in film production I switched over mainly to photography but the DSLR camera have me interested in shooting again. I have been peaking at the new D800…

Of course, the B&W Workshop with Vincent Versace & Harold Davis, wouldn’t suck either. :)

  9. I went to a Nikon School seminar in Chicago almost 20 years ago and was blown away. I would love to give it another go with the HDSLR class. Chicago lakefront video in early summer with the Nikon guys – that would be awesome!

  10. The two videos with Jay Maisel are some of the photographically inspiring videos I’ve seen. If you want inspiration… If you need a kick in the butt to get shooting more, watch these. They’re great!

  11. Brad, please enter me for Jay’s DVD. Even better would be a rebroadcast of the show when you released it with Jay and Adam as guests. Jay is amazing and definitely one of my heroes, but the comments from Adam about the taping were editing were entertaining and informative as well. Kelby Training on-line is one of the best bargains in photography today.

  12. Good
Morning Brad. I first met Jay Maisel in 1976 through the pages of a hard cover book
called “The Nikon Image”. That I believe was the forerunner of the Nikon Image
magazine.  Jay, through those images had
a very strong influence on my life in photography. I truly think of him as a mentor
and would love to own his DVD’s

  13. Hi from Spain. I’ve been in New York once and I felt in love with Manhattan. I hired this course in KelbyTraining and I felt in love with Jay Maisel. Well, not in that sense, you know what I mean, I hope… :(
In any case that DVD would be “My treasure….”.

Here a big fan of Kelby too.

  14. I would love to win the Maisel DVD set. With a second child on the way, I had to forego my Kelby Training membership for the time being, but the reason I signed up for it in the first place was for the two Maisel sessions, so I’d LOVE to be able to watch them whenever I want.

  15. Jay Maisel videos provided some of the most unique information in any class.  And, you had to pay attention because the insights popped up when least expected.  Would love to win the set.

  16. Soon retiring, and planning on increasing my photo-time spent outdoors, and Jay Maisel’s DVD would be a great addition to my learning curve.  Although I drop-in and check the site often, I had to update my browser to post here.  :)

  17. Wow, you have so many awesome FREE items for us to win. I am most interested in winning the Nikon School for DSLR Video in Chicago, June 2 & 3. That would be so sweet to win that training, it sounds like it is a very worth while class according to Matt’s write up. Thanks for the chance to win.

  18. I first learned about this video when Howard Stern mentioned it on his radio show.  I have watched some of it on Kelby Training.  Having it on DVD would be awesome!

  19. Never been to NY yet and NEVER will be lucky enough to shoot it with Jay Maisel, winning the DVD will be the next best thing to that. I need a Bad A$$ like Jay to help take away my intimidation of street photography. Jay Maisel will be to me what Mickey was to Rocky! =)

  20. Can’t wait to see what the DVD will be like, I have seen both classes online a few times and learn somthing new every time I watch them. Sign me up for the giveaway :)

  21. I would greatly appreciate the Moab workshop! I am only 14 and have learned all my photography from you Scott! It would be a great way for me to expand my abilities! :~)

  22. Wow. The workshop in Moab sounds really interesting. Few years ago I used to do biking and currently I am really into to photography. That would be a dream come true!

  23. Hi Scott / Brad!

On my list of dream workshops; Mr. Jay Maisel! Until then, the DVD would be awesome! ;-)

Also, the Grid “critique” episode was interesting, in fact, I’ll bet that would/could be an entirely different weekly show. You’ve time to kill, right? ;-)

Thanks for all you and the team do!

    Doug

  24. I’m finally glad to see info about the Jay Maisel DVD’s. I kept looking for when it would available and soon it will be! I’m in my late 50’s and on a limited income, but I’ve been a fan of his work for decades. I still remember the cover of American Photo where he was buried up to his neck in slides. Put my name in to the drawing as well!

  25. Best ever idea with blind critique! Maybe new show “Blind Critiques TV”. It would be great trio with DTown and Photoshop User TV.
I’d like to be on Jay’s DVD list.

  26. Would LOVE to win this DVD. Just came back from a job transfer and visited NYC every weekend to photograph. THANK YOU SCOTT KELBY FOR OFFERING THIS FABULOUS OFFER! Just purchased LIGHT IT, SHOOT IT, RETOUCH IT, LOVE IT SO MUCH!! I cannot wait to come see you in person. Your products are on all my Wish lists(Christmas, Birthday, Valentine’s Day, Anniversary, etc.) Thank you!

  27. A friend of mine recently flew to New York and attended Jay’s workshop. He said it was one of the best workshops he has ever experienced. Whoever wins the DVD will enjoy it for sure.

  28. I still can’t believe all the cool stuff you give away!
If picked and given a choice, I would to win of the following

    B&W workshop pass
    Concert book
    jays DVD

    Too many choices!

    Thanks again guys!

  29. I’m going to NYC next week as part of the GMU ArtsBus and would love to meet and shoot with Mr. Maisel. Since that’s not going to happen, having the DVD set would be the next best thing to being there. See you at PSW.

  30. Great to see one of the few car photographers i look at on Kelbytraining.
Tim Wallace has done some really awesome shots of cars and i hope there is a chance that he will do some more classes. This one was really basic, well for me that is. I would like to see some of his more epic shoots where there is some more love behind it. :)

  31. I have watched both events Day with jay Maisel live, and it was a very interesting experience in photowalking in New York and Jay’s creative process. I wouldn’t mind winning those DVDs to watch it from time to time as a reminder lesson.

  32. Jay Maisel totally rocks! I just re-listened to Ibarionex’s interview with him, he shared many of the same things he talks about with Scott, I would love to have these keepsakes! Great giveaway!

  33. I watched the videos with Jay and Scott through Kelby Training and they were so great that I want to share them with a friend – have been waiting for this DVD release! And a chance to win it free! Awesome.

  34. B&W with Vincent Versace and Harold Davis.
How can I turn this one down?  So close to me, (plus the BBQ sounds great!! – Definitely will need to throw towelettes in my camera bag :p
