It’s #TravelTuesday and I, Dave Williams, am here as always. This week I want to discuss a regular topic, but one that requires constant re-evaluation owing to its constant evolution. Social media has revolutionized the way we share and consume visual content. For photographers, it has become an essential tool for showcasing their work, connecting with potential clients and peers, and building a brand. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of social media for photographers and provide some tips for making the most of it.
- Choose the right platforms
The first step in using social media as a photographer is choosing the right platform(s). While Facebook and Instagram are the most popular platforms, there are many others that may be more suited to your needs. For example, if you specialise in corporate or commercial photography, LinkedIn may be a better fit. If you focus on fine art photography, platforms like 500px or Behance may be more appropriate. It’s important to research and understand each platform’s audience and how they engage with visual content. It’s also important that we place the right posts on the right platforms, paying particular attention to video content! TikTok needs a short form video and not a blog post, for example.
- Be consistent
Consistency is key when it comes to building a following on social media. This means posting regularly and at the same times each day or week. It also means maintaining a consistent visual style and tone in your posts. This will help your followers recognise your work and distinguish it from others in their feed. This is just one of many factors that steers the algorithm, determining who is exposed to our content.
- Engage with your audience
Social media is a two-way conversation. Engaging with your audience is essential to building a community around your work. This means responding to comments and messages, reposting user-generated content, and asking for feedback. It also means taking the time to engage with other photographers and creatives in your industry.
- Showcase your work
Your social media accounts should serve as a quasi-portfolio of your work. Use high-quality images and showcase a variety of your work to demonstrate your skills and range. You can also use social media to share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your creative process, which can be an effective way to build a personal connection with your audience.
- Use hashtags
Hashtags are a powerful tool for increasing the visibility of your posts. Use relevant hashtags to increase the chances of your posts being discovered by potential clients and followers. You can also create your own branded hashtag to help your followers easily find your work. Currently it’s recommended to use a handful of hashtags on Instagram, not the full thirty we’re allowed… but this is a constant flux.
- Collaborate with other photographers and brands
Collaborating with other photographers and brands can be a great way to expand your reach and gain new followers. Look for opportunities to collaborate on projects or cross-promote each other’s work. This can also help you build relationships with other creatives in your industry.
Social media has become an essential tool for us as photographers looking to showcase our work and build a following. By choosing the right platforms, being consistent, engaging with your audience, showcasing your work, using hashtags, and collaborating with other creatives, you can maximise the benefits of social media and build a successful photography business.
