Now this is big!
Adobe has recently rolled out a special program to invite some members of NAPP (the National Association of Photoshop Professionals) to become private Beta testers of the next version of Adobe Photoshop, and start working with the future of Photoshop today.
Members who are invited to become Beta testers have to complete a non-disclosure agreement, and agree to abide by Adobe’s testing procedures (this isn’t a public beta, so Adobe is looking for your feedback and testing results). We, at NAPP, put together a special video on what the requirements are to become an official beta tester, and the link to the video is in the invitation email, should you receive it.
If you’re a NAPP member, keep an eye on your email in-box sometime before Friday, as you may be invited to join the program (thousands of NAPP members around the world are being invited—just not all at one time, because of the large pool of eligible beta testers).
Once you’ve completed the forms and agreements, if you’re accepted into the testing program, Adobe will send you a notification email directly with further instructions, and how to download the software.
Thanks Adobe—we’re excited, and truly honored that you value the feedback and input of NAPP members enough to offer this first-of-its-kind private beta testing opportunity.
Scott is so cool.(brown nose)
Awsome!
Fingers crossed. This would be akin to winning the lottery for me.
this is cool! hope i get in!
Hopefully I get an E-mail
Heh….70,000+ NAPP members and it sounds like about 1000 beta testers…your odds of participating are probably 1:70! The forums and portfolio sections will be abuzz! (Great motivation for a membership drive too…or is it only to existing members?)
Only existing members… They have to review your work that you have submitted to their gallery already. At least that’s what I got out of it.
Very cool. Very cruel.
Tell us about it, then say it will be select members… aahhhhhh. ;)
Jason, there is still a chance, fairly good one too. One can only hope for the email.
That’s very cool – thanks to Adobe and NAPP for giving us this chance, even if it is a slim one!
Off to check my Inbox… ;-)
I hope I’m not the kid on the sideline that never gets picked!
Wow, all this talk of Beta testing threw me back a few years. I was one of the first beta testers for Xbox Live back in the day. I remember logging on and seeing 20 players….world wide! I also think it was the last time I logged on and had a decent game-minus the obnoxious teenage kid.
I think Photoshop CS5 would now be more my pace.
I too was a Xbox Live beta tester, ah to remember the good ole days. Agreed about CS5 being a more low key test.
I was a Win 7 beta tester, made me feel kind of special. :)
Hey, I was one of those 20 people, too. Still have the t-shirt (I have great hands) and the little orange memory thing.
You’re right, it was a better community than the kind of stuff you see today.
This way to cool Scott. I can not wait to see it.
COOL! I want, I want, I want!!
NAPP rocks, hun?
Cheeers!
Hmmm … why is it so cool to test a software? Do you get paid for that?
Testing software gives you an opportunity to kind of get a “sneak peak” at what is coming down the pike…and as an early adopter, you also are getting up to speed on the latest and greatest technologies ahead of the curve…which is always a good thing (don’t you want to be ahead of the game?) :)
This is awesome.
I would have gotten very excited about this if I had ever understood Photoshop at more than the most elemental level. I do envy those who do understand and skillfully employee it.
I would really love to test CS5, I would really like to test the new features, hope I get Lucky… Marc, no you don’t get paid, but you do get to test new features and have input for the final product (if you choose to) I’ve beta tested software for 20+ years and it is a rewarding experience!
This is the one beta I would love to do, since I’ve been using Photoshop every day in my photography business since Ver 1.0 came out.
Where would I find instructions for setting up a bootable portable hard drive and installing beta software on it?
RC has a nice tut for setting up a bootable portable HD in the members area of the NAPP site Jim.
I couldn’t find that tutorial – do you remember where it was/is>
I can’t find it either. Anyone have a link.
If/When you get the email there will be a link to download the video on the special NAPP site.
I got the email, I did the registration, I was accepted, I got the software. I lost the email with the link to the NAPP site. HELP
where???
go to this page http://www.photoshopuser.com/members/beta/ and click on the link under the video.
I guess this means I should skip CS4 and wait for CS5. Ah, the world of technology, here today, obsolete tomorrow.
That is not really the case.
The software has not even been announced yet and there is usually a long lag between announcement and shipping.
If you need Photoshop now then waiting till CS5 is released could be a long wait.
Is there any rough timeline for the official launch?
By the way, have you ever seen Adobe’s “Use of the Photoshop trademark” guidelines? They can be found here: https://www.adobe.com/misc/trade.html#section-4
Pretty funny – here’s an example:
“Always capitalize and use trademarks in their correct form.
Correct: The image was enhanced with Adobe® Photoshop® Elements software.
Incorrect: The image was photoshopped.
Incorrect: The image was Photoshopped.
Incorrect: The image was Adobe® Photoshopped. “
Indeed, that is funny. Do they really expect you to paste the “®”-symbol if you just want to write about what you did to a picture :)?
Me me me me – I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed. I’m great at breaking software and being able to reproduce it and better yet, write a detail description. Of course that degree in Comp Sci helps too.
I soo want an e-mail!!!
Scott, how about a raffle for the beta? Donate x amount to the orphanage, get a beta ticket. (getting desperate here)
Wow is that awesome! What an opportunity!!
My mum once tested a washing machine a few months before it was released. Does that count? It was rubbish, by the way.
Lucky people testing CS5 – enjoy (it). I don’t really want it yet. I’m still basking in the glow of being a CS4 owner.
I test drove a car once and hit a no parking sign. I don’t think Adobe could find out about that.
This is great!! How exciting!!!!
Wow, this is great news!!! I too am usually the “FAT KID” who gets picked last because I am only there to make the sides even. We can hope!!!
Wow, I checked my inbox and there was something from Adobe Systems, Inc.
Alas, it was only marketing.
Would love to get an invite.

Hmmm. I’ve got the LR3 beta now and am using but CS5 would be a whole new level.
i hope i get one!!!! checking my inbox now…….
As an ACI I have been using a beta version for a couple of months. Getting NAPP members to help bug test and provide feedback is a great idea. The new version is huge!
Hopefully I get an E-mail
I just got an e-mail from NAPP for the invitation. Please note, that even if you apply, Adobe will decide if you are needed. So even then, still no guarantees.
I know one person who WILL be one of the testers and I work for them!! Woot for being able to play around with BETA! XD
I got the email before I read this blog post and I was stunned. I had to read it several times before it sunk in, then I immediately went online and signed up. I hope I get the next email from Adobe.
Hooray! I was accepted. HOWEVER, I have lost the tutorial on how to make a bootable disk on whch to install CS5. Please help ASAP.
You can download the video back at the NAPP Beta Welcome Page.
Do you know where I can find the old video for the spotlight effect created for the academy award? It used to be on the NAPP site under the “how’d they do that” section.
Thanks,

Hi there, I found your blog on Google while seeking for first aid for a heart attack and your post looks very interesting for me.
You had solid ideas there. I made a search on the issue and found most peoples will agree with your blog.
Excellent. Only now do I realize I’ve probably ignored or deleted the wrong (right) mail or email. Oh well, maybe next time.
Too late to the invite party. Maybe the next beta. I’ve done some betat testing in the past. It’s always great to be one of the first to see the product…especially something like photshop that it used a lot. You have some really nice shots at the top of page.
