APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur – How To Publish A Book from Guy Kawasaki & Shawn Welch Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch have teamed up to bring you APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur – How To Publish A Book, a Kindle ebook they wrote to help people understand self-publishing. APE’s thesis is powerful yet simple: filling the roles of Author, Publisher and Entrepreneur yields results that rival traditional publishing. We call this “artisanal publishing”–that is, when writers who love their craft control the publishing process and produce high-quality books.

Back in October, I made my annual trek to New York City for Photo Plus Expo. But this year I did something that I hadn’t done in previous years… I signed up to have my portfolio reviewed while I was there.
These portfolio reviews are a little different than most others. They’re done by creative directors from major magazines, art buyers from ad agencies, photo editors from wire services, and other people who see tons of images every day from a multitude of photographers (and some of them are photographers themselves). My experience with this was a good one, but that’s another blog post for another day. I mention these portfolio reviews because one of them led to the events that took place this past weekend…
The last review I had was with a photo editor from Clear Channel Media + Entertainment, a company that owns 850 radio stations across the country. She liked my work so much that she wound up hiring me to cover the Jingle Ball concerts for Y100 in Miami and 93.3 FLZ in Tampa.
The lineups for these shows included everyone from up and coming artists like Walk The Moon, Karmin, and Austin Mahone…
Walk The Moon
…to megastars like Flo Rida, Enrique Iglesias, and Justin Bieber.
And since I was shooting for Clear Channel, I got an all access pass to both shows. (more…)

It’s the one where they’re unveiling what’s next in the Creative Cloud is today, and I’m part of the presentation (I’ll be talking a little about the cloud itself, but then later on I’m doing a segment called “Hidden Gems” where I’ll be showing some new stuff and some little-known existing features in Photoshop.

Want more megapixels? Be careful what you wish for. I was reminded this week how large the file sizes are for images I shoot with my Nikon D800. I grabbed a hard drive to copy around 1,000 images I took in Cuba, and I was shocked to see that it wouldn’t fit on the drive because it was a whopping 43 Gigbytes!!! I looked at what the Raw files were from my Nikon D3s, and for around 1,000 Raw files it was 1/3 the size (around 15GB) and for the same number of JPEGs from a similar camera it around 6GB. I’ll shoot more than 1,000 photos at any given football game in just three hours (glad I’m shooting JPEG).
Anyway, I added a chart below with the specs. Eyeopening. (And yes, I know it’s just simple math, and that hard drive space has never been cheaper, but until you actually try and copy that many GB and your hard drive says “Not enough room” and you think, “Nah, it can’t be” you found out, “Oh, it be.”).
You will get a kick out of this video! I know I’m probably the 15,000th person to share this very cute Jimmy Fallon/Mariah Carey rendition of Mariah’s “All I want for Christmas is You” Christmas song, but Kalebra and I just watched it a few mornings ago and it really got us in the Christmas Spirit (and I’ve been singing it ever since).
Hope it makes your Holiday, and your Tuesday a little brighter. :-)
Gotta run! Hope to see you all today at the Adobe event (it’s free!). Cheers, -Scott
Every once in a while I write a book on something that’s way outside my usual Photography and Photoshop topics, like a few years back when I wrote a short hardcover book for guys who didn’t want kids (trying to explain why they’re missing out on about the greatest thing ever!). Well, this book is certainly something different for me, and it’s on a topic that I would have ever dreamed that I would write.
I hope you’ll take a moment and watch the short video above about why I wrote it and who it’s for. Also, if you order (or download) a copy, know that 100% of the profits from the book will go to the Springs of Hope Orphanage in Kenya.
NOTE: on the video it says that’s its only available in ebook format at this time (it’s now in the Apple iBooks store — here’s the link), but actually we now have printed copies and you can buy them directly from Amazon.com (here’s the link).
One more thing: I left the commenting turned off for this post, which is unusual for me, but this book is unusual for me too, and this way I can actually go to the office instead of just sitting around all day with my finger on the “Delete comment and block user button.” LOL! :)
Cheers, and here’s wishing you your best Monday yet!
All my best,
P.S.UPDATE:The book is now sold-out on Amazon.com, but you can still place your order there and as soon as they get the next shipment they’ll send your copy out straight away. Many thanks to every one who ordered a copy! :)
Adobe has asked me to show off some cool new Photoshop stuff (along with some other hidden gems), and the whole event will broadcast LIVE and you don’t want to miss what’s next in Adobe’s Creative Cloud.
When: Next Tuesday, December 11th, 2012 Time: 10:00 PST (1:00 pm New York Time) Where:Here’s the link.
The Photoshop Guys will be helping out in the live chats; answering questions and generally being pesty, so I hope you’ll join us all online for this very slick event. Lots of cool stuff to share. See you then! :-)
