Two weeks ago, on the “The Grid” we talked about Social Media for photographers, and we talked about Twitter, and Google+, and the new kid on the block (which is now reportedly the third largest social media site), Pinterest.
I asked my wife Kalebra to join us on the show, (she’s hooked on Google+ and has a really dedicated, fun, fully engaged group over there — link), and she loves Pinterest as well, so we talked quite a bit about both (I mostly griped about Twitter and their 140 character limit. Don’t get me started).
Anyway, last night she did a cute post about Pinterest over on Google+, and one of the people who follow her there wrote this comment:
“I’m reluctant to sign up for yet another social venue given my trouble keeping up with the four accounts I now have (fb, twit, linked,g+) but have been hearing enough about Pinterest that I’m intrigued. Can you clue me in to how Pinterest fits into the general mix? please and thank you!”

My wife wrote back a comment to him that I thought was the best description of what Pinterest is all about I had ever heard. I asked her if I could share it here with you today, because I think it will help a lot of folks understand what Pinterest is all about. She wrote…

Have you ever torn a travel picture or recipe out of a magazine and stuck it in a folder? How about a photo for inspiration for your next shoot? Well because we view so many of these things on the web now Pinterest is a way to do the same thing we did with magazines but online.
For instance, I love to travel! So, I have a folder (Pinterest calls them “boards”) I named “Places” (link) and it’s full of photos of places I’ve been, and places I want to go. I am also a pilot so I have a board named “Of Flight and Fancy (link) and I LOVE chocolate so I have a board for that too (link).
You could have boards like these for any of your own interests – it’s lots of fun to manage (and have instant access to) all of the things that interest and inspire you.
Another thing I’ve heard people say they like about it is that interaction is not really required–you can–but it’s not expected. I hope this helps. Happy Pinning! :)

Personally, I am not quite there yet. There is a strong force inside of me that does not allow me to use someone elses pictures. If I don’t know the very origin of a picture (like the photographer’s homepage), I can’t credit the person or even get him some extra traffic so my inner voice keeps me from “pinning”… I will “like” instead if someone else has it pinned. Might seem petty, but if I can’t give credit, sharing it is a no go for me… Admittedly, it is a bit of a sore point after my pictures started popping up all over facebook lately.
Other than that, I think it is a great way to share. It is a bit like throwing stones into a lake and watching the ripples spread from the center. Following the pins can lead to discovering great new stuff, if pinned right (ie, from the homepage of the architect, not the 16 years old’s blog who happens to like houses).

Nice overview about Pinterest.. However, I went through a few of the Kalebra pins/boards and most are linked back to spam or one a virus (breakfast egg quiche image)
I’m feeling the same way as Ronnie. Pinterest is conceptually interesting, but I have the feeling that most of the content that’s currently up there isn’t owned by (or covered under CC license) the person who has posted it.
How would you, RC, Joe McNally feel if your content popped up over there, without credit, links back or simply without permission. Just wondering….

I watched that episode and she really inspired me to give Pinterest another try. I just really didn’t get it the first time around, so my account sits dusty and neglected. Time to get out the Pledge! ;0)
I understand the concept of Pinterest, and think it is a wonderful idea, but I wonder if the Pinners realise that by pinning images, they grant Pinterest “a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, worldwide license to use, display, reproduce, re-pin, modify (e.g., re-format), re-arrange, and distribute your User Content” …………… all without the original authors’ permission and/or knowledge ;-( I am not sure about anyone else, but I don’t want other people to grant Pinterest these rights on any of my photos
Yeah, so that way Pinterest can take all your photos and resell them. I think that’s what Pinterest is secretly really all about — an elaborate ruse to steal the copyrights of unwitting photographers and then sell their work behind their back. Good catch on that one! ;-)
Scott, I agree that the intent of Pinterest is to use pics for the purpose it was established – to share each others pics without any ulterior motive. In my case as a PS painter, I would be amused and applaud anyone who could take one of my pedestrian paintings and actually make financial gain from them. Most people don’t have to worry that their genius will be exploited. The majority of pics on any website or gallery fall into the bland category, anyway, sort of a bell curve effect.

After watching The Grid episode I had a completely new appreciation for Pinterest. I have read where they refer to this type of website as a “curated” website. Initially it didn’t hit me that this was like going to a museum that has a Fine Art Room or a Dinosaur area, but that is exactly what this is. For the people that are so worried about their work being “taken”, keep in mind if it is on the web and able to be pinned, you are to blame not the person who appreciates your work and wants to share it with others (that would be peer to peer marketing). If it is hi-res enough that that can use it commercially, you may want to rethink how you post it. My Disclaimer: I don’t make a living at photography so I don’t care. I post 300dpi images all the time and can only hope to be in the league where somebody wants to steal it and uses it commercially.
I LOVE pinterest more then any of those other sites, which is saying something. I follow a lot of people, and get annoyed when they don’t pin often enough LOL. I used to keep a secret little tash of stunning photos… I wrote about how Pinterest helped me to ‘come out’. I’m amazed at both how many social networks there are and how people can keep up with them all! I barely have time to keep up with Facebook let alone twitter, flickr, 500px, and various message boards.

I signed up for Pinterest after watching that episode of The Grid. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it’s usefulness. I see some potential there, but still trying to figure out if the time to invest being on the site is worth it to 1) look for interesting photo ideas that could spark a creative bug in me, and 2) drive traffic to my website and blog with images I pin there.
My one issue about it is that it just seems so “busy” on the screen–but maybe I have to organize who I follow better. In any case, thanks for highlighting it on The Grid.
I’ve been using Pinterest for a while now. My girlfriend makes fun of me for using it so much. I use it as a social book mark too. Well, it’s social because others see it. If they like what I post, they can subscribe to that board. You can see my interests by looking at my board. Brewing, Photography, geek, humor, recipes. Once a board starts getting big (recipes) I try to split ones out. I now have Chicken Recipes, Slow-cooker recipes, desserts, etc. I have photography split up that way, as well.
On top of that, I have a board called Posing inspiration. Ever see a photo and want to re-create that “look”? Pinterest is great for putting those photos in one spot.
I also post some of my photos there. I have links back to my flickr or 500px site. I hope people that like them, leave the links back, but not required. I have over 400 pins, and maybe 15 of my personal photos.

I have been following your comments about the various ways to display your photos via some social network or other. I am about to be 70, have been taking photos for a quite a while, and up til now about the only one that sees them is my dog Molly. I would like to try one of these forums, but am not interested in anything but the display, and feed back of the pictures.
Do you have a recommendation as to which one might work best for my circumstances.

The more choices the better, so I’m delighted that Pinterest exists. And for those who find it useful, more power to them. But these days, it’s getting more and more difficult to find any “free” service that is really watching out for my interests. I’m not a professional photographer (or anything, for that matter) so if anyone pinched one of my photos, I’d be honored. Having said that, I’m not all that certain that I’d be comfortable with the idea of any others using my work without me knowing it. The artists who follow Scott on this site are so talented that none of you need to “pin” from anybody else. So it begs the question, Is Pinterest for the non-talented who can’t produce their own stuff? In my case, thanks but no thanks.
I am still trying to figure out Pinterest as well, but this is a great start. Anyone know of a quick way to actually get an invite for an account? Waiting on Pinterest seems to take forever!

I love the idea of Pinterest but most of my casual browsing now is done on the iPad or iPhone so “pinning” is still a little clunky. I really hope they are not an idea that has come past its prime because it is way more fun than “clipping” into OneNote (although I still love OneNote for organizing the rest of my life!)

But how does this deffer from tagging photos in Picasa? And tag is then written in the photo. And you can tag photo by as many terms as you like. And you can upload to several web services and get social about it.
I pin stuff to Pinterest from the Pin It bookmarklet more than checking out what others have pinned on the site itself, mostly because you can get sucked in for an hour before you realize it; it’s addictive. Pinterest can be an amazingly effective way to share content. I wrote a post last summer about my instagallery, a magnetic chalkboard where I print and hang my Instagram photos. It went viral on Pinterest and is now my most-read post in nearly 6 years of blogging.

I looked at Pinterest and I like it very much. But, I had to decide where to draw the line on computer time. I would spend even more time on my computer, as it is I am on it 24 hours a day … where the heck am I gonna find more hours??? Ok…I think I can find a few hours somewhere…..
I love Pinterest. Mostly I am pinning recipes and decorating ideas for home renovations. Lots of bloggers and sites now have Pin it buttons because they want the exposure of having their ideas pinned. I’m finding it a great way to keep track of those recipes I come across while surfing around, plus pinning up home decorating ideas by room gives me this great way to keep track of ideas on one page. The great thing is, it doesn’t have to be a big social media project. You can use it when you have time, for what you need it for, and if you get followers, that’s nice–but not necessary.
I just started using Pinterest mainly because it is visual. Google +, Facebook, and twitter is causing information overload in my brain. I only have so much room in there and time and if I spend all my time on social media when will I be able to play Mass Effect 3 finally?
I would love to be on Pinterest… but I’m not because I wouldn’t like to think I could be part of a copyright lawsuit because someone wasn’t happy about me “pinning” one of their pictures. It’s a shame.
Part of me feels as though Pinterest could be a terrific tool for developing a photographer’s sense of composition, color rendition, framing, tonality, contrast and other attributes that are important to generating high quality images.
Another part of me feels as though Pinterest is going to be a copyright nightmare. I don’t see how it can be monetized in its currently configuration without incurring the wrath of IP lawyers from every quarter.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
Hate to spoil the Pinterest party here, but as photographers and creators of original content, we should be incredibly concerned about the copyright infringement issues that are being created and encouraged by Pinterest!Â
While they are making some modifications to deal with the fact that their original set-up pretty blatently promoted copyright violation, there are still a lot of issues going on with it. Please read the blog post “Why I tearfully deleted my pinterest inspiration boards” by Kirsten Kowalski for starters, and the WSJ article “Is Pinterest the Next Napster.”
